RE: What am I doing wrong with my Yamaha 2400?
I left old gas in mine for 6 months. Started it up to prepare for a trip and it surged like your describing. Put fresh fuel in it and put a load on the gen for 20 mintues. The surging went away and now its running like a champ.
Stabil Stabil Stabil...........
This sounds like my exact situation. I think I used the set back in april, but my gas could be even older than that.
I take it, the amps that I need, can't be achieved due to my carb situation.
What am I doing wrong with my Yamaha 2400?
Hi guys,
I'm having issues with my relatively new 2400.
The basics: it has gas, and proper oil. I had the refer turned off, and most of the lights turned off on a three year old Terry with no extension cords, only the rig to adapter to one plug on the genset.
Sometimes the 2400 will surge in cycles under very low loads. At points it will stall out.. I really have to watch the choke to keep it running for the first hour or so.
Does the 2400 split amps across both the ac plugs? Because, I don't even come close to running my 13k A/C. Even worse, it will not power my Microwave without the micro going into Error.
I'm very sad about the situation, but I will not rule out that I am doing something wrong.
RV'ing the Giant Sequoia National Monument?
Hi guys,
I'd love to take my 5'er (25-28 foot) to see Giant Sequoia National Monument in a few weeks. We went to one spot, I think it was Wishon, and it was very tough to get the 5'er up. Does anyone have a good suggestion for how to do the Monument for a first timer with such short notice?
Feel free to PM me too.
Best,
SnS.
RE: Yamaha 2400is generator/13,500 BTU ac
I chickened out this morning and bought the Honda EU 3000 from Wise. The extra $650 stings and I'll probably throw my back out moving it, but I figured I'm not rich enough to have to buy something twice if the first one doesn't do what I need it to do.
BTW, if anyone is debating buying a generator, the manager I talked to after ordering to thank them for their time answering all my questions told me that I made a good decision to buy when I did. He said all the Yamahas and Honda units will soon be seeing a 10-15% increase in price nationally based on the dollar weakening. Said the manufacturers have told them to start preparing for it now caus its coming this summer. So if you wait, you could be looking at an extra couple hundred dollars for that same generator.
FYI: I ordered the Honda 3000 from Wise Sales in Illinois yesterday morning....I just got a call that Fed Ex has it here in Cincinnati and wants to deliver it today. One day freight delivery. Yowza!
Congrats!! I am sure you will be happy.
RE: Yamaha 2400is generator/13,500 BTU ac
In retrospect, if I was going to do it over, I might go with the two honda's in lieu of one yamaha. Don't get me wrong. I love my yamaha.
Hehe, there is nothing quite like that sinking feeling as your family watches and the brand new Yamaha you talked them into can't start your AC.
I'm sure the hard start cap will do the trick. I just wish it worked right out of the box so I could bask in the moment of glory.
RE: Yamaha 2400is generator/13,500 BTU ac
I bought a 2008 Prowler with a 13.5k BTU AC about a month ago, and based on the advice I read here, I bought a 2400is generator to run it. Temps this weekend were mid 90's and I found that my generator doesn't have enough umph to start the AC. I plugged into a contractor grade 4000 (Honda) and that didn't sweat starting it up at all. I ran the AC for 15 minutes on that, shut it down, waited a few minutes, then tried again to start it with my generator. No luck. So right now I have an $1100 generator with 20 hours on it (and one oil change) that won't do what I need it to. I've heard about some sort of soft-start mod that can be done to an AC...I'm guessing that will void any warranty on it, but it might be worthwhile (as opposed to selling this generator at a loss and spending even more to get a couple Honda 2000's which have less run-time capacity per fill-up). :(
I'm guessing I can't parallel a Yamaha 1000 into the 2400is, right? I read in the other 13.5/2400is something about having to put "the convertor on the same side (50 amp)" Does anyone know what that means? I'd like to try all reasonable options available before I start looking to replace a brand new generator.
Blues,
Dave
I am in a similar boat.
On the first real test, the Yamaha could'nt turn over the AC. I also realized from reading this thread that I had my reefer on auto. I'll try a quick test later to see if running it on propane will allow me to get the AC going. I'll be adding the capacitor, as I really want the Yamaha to work. It's pretty quiet, and its light enough to lift on my own. If I can't get it to work, I will be very sad.
As with Dave above, I wondered if I could parallel with a 1000 to get the juice I need? Also, I saw someone say they let their AC cycle all day in order to get it to work? Is there a break in period on an AC? I suspect my AC has been on 10 hours straight sofar, is it broken in?
Thanks

RE: campgrounds in ca
Fortunately there are lots of great spots in Ca.. If people go to one, I'm sure the other will open up =). Any along the PCH are great.
Sofar we have had only one miss in Ca.. It was Wishon campground off the 190 by Springville. The one lane road is thin, long and steep. It had both of our F-250's in the yellow for transmissions. The website says 30 foot sites, but the loop had us asking other campers to move cars to get out and we were only 25 feet. Don't get me wrong, the place is beautiful. It's just not designed for much over 22 feet in my opinion.

RE: Honda EU3000 or Yamaha EF2400is
Welp, I took the plunge...
Welcome to the growing club! Hope it does as well for you as it has for me and the many I've talked with. Be sure to post your personal experiences too. Good or bad, all posts help with the overall picture.
Here is a quick update for potential purchasee's of the Yamaha.
As many of us, I too have to tinker. I did not have the Yamaha EF2400is home for 15 minutes before I took a drill to it =). I drilled a hole in the handle frame in order to secure a chain to the frame itself(Warning Ahead). I did this because the handles seem easily unbolted. A chain looped around the handles would not be very secure. Luck was on my side as I could have made a big mistake. I never thought to measure the distance needed to slide a long tanged padlock around the chain and get it through the hole without binding... It fit, but had I gone over 1/2 of an inch, I would have a hole for security and an additional hole to remind me of the lesson.
Moving the unit:
The unit was pretty easily moved with one able person. We had campers on one side, then on the other. Out of politeness I would move the gen to the opposite side of the site from our neighbors. It definately takes two hands.
Gassing up:
I filled the unit twice. If I had to guess, I used two to three gallons total. If I had to guess on run time.. Mmmm, maybe 20 hours?
I can tell you, you can gas up at 2pm and run to 7pm and still have plenty of gas in the tank.
Ooops my bad:
I did cause the Yamaha to have a moment of wierdness. I had inadvertantly set it on a couple of large leaves that proceeded to block the air intake screen. It started to cycling like it did not know if it wanted to go into high or low speed. Noticing the problem, I moved the unit and it ran flawlessly for the next 4 days.
Sound:
This is the big one everyone wants to know.. Frankly I was nervous as I knew the honda was quiet enough for me, and I had not heard the Yamaha in person. There were several Hondas near by, and I had the only Yamaha. In a sentence. In quiet mode, the Hondas seemed louder at times, and the Yamaha seemed louder at times... Go figure.
Upon startup I was relieved that the Yamaha seemed to be on par with the Honda 1000 that was running one site away. If you stood between them the Honda had a 'puttering' sound, and the Yamaha had a slightly more 'Whirrrring' sound. I walked to a Honda 2000 and it seemed to sound pretty similar. There was one Honda 2000 that was set in an area pretty thick with pine needles, that was more quiet than the rest of us. I suspect the pine needles absorbed some of the sound at the expense of a fire hazard.
At times, I could hear my Yamaha over the Honda, at times the Honda seemed more than my Yamaha. I'm sure that variables like wind direction and angles of surfaces near the gen play a big part in the perception of sound.
After 5 days of paying attention to every generator in the area I was left thinking the Honda and the Yamaha seemed pretty much equal. I also think that people more sensitive to higher drone sound would hear the Yamaha, and people sensitive to the puttering sound will hear the Honda.
All in All:
I am very pleased with the Yamaha's performance and ease of operation. It's not louder than the Honda, its not quieter than the Honda. I look forward to doing some air conditioning tests when the heat around here gets to 110. If it runs then, it will be the killer gen set.
GO Blue!

RE: The 'Whirrrrr' of an inverter.
If you can't stand the 59.94Hz rap of over-modulated video, you should try the 15,750Khz whine of a flyback transformer in the TV. At 53 (I think) I can still clearly hear it across the room. In the 5th grade the school called "mom" because her kid's hearing was well beyond the capabilities of their equipment. It's top-end was somewhere around 60Khz. :) Mosquito repellers drive me nuts too. Although the generator doesn't bother me at all.
I don't think I have ever heard a Mosquito repeller. That is some pretty high pitch hearing.
RE: The 'Whirrrrr' of an inverter.
One advantage to having been in the Artillery-I can't hear high-pitched sounds like that!! Would a simple shield like a piece of plywood or polystyrene insulation board between the generator and the MH help?
If you put your hand over the grill, the sound dissapears. Although, I suspect that is a good way to burn up a gen =P.
I did some experimenting directing the sound with 'sheilding', plywood in my case. It was pretty effective.
RE: The 'Whirrrrr' of an inverter.
To illustrate the sound I found a video on youtube
http://youtube.com/watch?v=en49pTDt5HU&feature=related
If you listen, it sounds like a tea kettle is whistling at the same time the motor is running.
The 'Whirrrrr' of an inverter.
Heya,
I'm enjoying breaking in my brand new Yamaha 2400 inverter.
I've noticed that along with the putter of the engine, there is a slight higher pitch 'whirrrr' sound under the sound of the motor. Eventhough it is very minimal, it happens to be at an unplesant frequency. Is the whirr going to get more subtle over use? Is anyone else sensitive to this sound?
Cheers,

RE: Honda EU3000 or Yamaha EF2400is
Welp, I took the plunge.. The Yamaha is sitting in the truck as I type. I look forward to the transition from Yamaha speculator to Yamaha user.
I will update my experience for others who are in the market.
Here is a final note on why I went with Yamaha.:
Of the 3 outlets I went to, all said they did not get any reported problems or returns. The only problem that users have had, is when they run the oil too low and the user does not know why the unit shuts off.
I finally found the specs that said my A/C is a newer 13,500btu. I am very hopeful it will start with the yamaha.
Finally, thanks for all the info 2manytoyz. Your data really did sell the unit for me. I was 100% honda 2000 until I saw this thread. If you ever need a reference from Yamaha for some sort of 'sponsorship', add me as a reference =).
RE: Honda EU3000 or Yamaha EF2400is
2manytoyz,
Driling a cable hole is a fantasic tip. I was considering ways to secure the unit that included welding a cage straps and all sorts of jibber jabber.. Now I can plainly see two strategically placed holes drilled into the handle frame will be a fine deterent.
Thanks!
RE: Honda EU3000 or Yamaha EF2400is
Just a quick note on the frustration of Yamaha gen purchasing..
I went to three local places. When asked about running an A/C on it, each one replied "I dunno if I would try that...". Only one salesman would admit he has seen a yamaha run an A/C "and that was not on a really hot day"..
It's annoying to have the salesperson trying to steer me to a bigger gen set. Perhaps they are trying to garner higher sales, perhaps they are misinformed, perhaps they are speaking from real experience... Either way, I tend to find you guys here tend to be better informed.
Does anyone else have similar experiences?
RE: Honda EU3000 or Yamaha EF2400is
I'm watching the discussion too.
We are on the verge of investing either in the Honda2000, or Yamaha2400. Here is how I understand it sofar.

There is a 'good' chance it may run my A/C.
The salesman said it has 'cleaner' power.. I'm suspect of such comments, but I'll point it out.
The metal handles are easier for security

To me, given the choice between a Honda 2000 or a Yamaha 2400 the Yamaha seems better at my own budget. Given an unlimited budget, I would go with a dual Honda 2000 setup.
